Wrinkles on the face are caused by a number of factors including the ageing process, movement of muscles, sun damage and smoking.
As you age the skin becomes thinner and loses structural proteins such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid which give the skin structure, elasticity and volume. In addition to this the cheeks drop down, causing folds between the cheeks and lips (nasolabial fold and marionette lines). Muscle movement in the upper half of the face causes lines to appear, including frown-lines, forehead lines and lines around the eyes (crowfeet). In Australia photoaging, or damage by the sun, is also a major cause of facial lines and wrinkles. Smoking and other environmental factors also contribute to wrinkle formation.
If the wrinkles are caused by muscle movement then anti-wrinkle muscle relaxants will improve the lines. If the lines are deep then anti-wrinkle muscle relaxants may need to be used in combination with other treatments, such as dermal fillers, which replace the volume in the skin, or Fraxel laser resurfacing.
Medical skin care programs and chemical peels improve the appearance of the skin including pigmentation problems and fine lines, and also help the skin to protect and repair itself from further damage, and should always be used in conjunction with other wrinkle treatments.

Anti-wrinkle treatments injections can be used to treat a wide range of medical conditions, and are used to reduce wrinkles, stop excessive sweating and treat migraines.
Anti-wrinkle treatments has been used safely for more than ten years in the treatment of medical conditions such as facial muscle spasms in both adults and children.
The main cosmetic use for anti-wrinkle treatments is to improve lines around the eye, eyebrow and forehead. These wrinkles form with time from activity of muscles in these areas. Anti-wrinkle treatments can be used to temporarily weaken these muscles, causing the lines to diminish after treatment, as the muscles no longer function to produce them. Anti-wrinkle treatments take away a stressed or anxious appearance, making you look younger and more relaxed.
If anti-wrinkle treatments are used to treat lines that are very shallow, then often these disappear completely. If the lines are deep and permanent then other treatments such as dermal fillers may be required if you wish the lines to be removed completely.
If you start regular treatments with anti-wrinkle treatments before permanent lines start, then you will delay and possibly prevent wrinkles appearing, helping to maintain a youthful appearance.
Treatment involves a series of tiny injections into the muscle directly beneath the frown line. The injection causes about 30 seconds of stinging, and occasionally a slight swelling or bruising may occur.
The patient should move the muscles in the injected area for 5-10 minutes after the injection, and must remain upright for four hours following treatment, and resist touching or massaging the treated area. This could spread the anti-wrinkle treatments into unwanted areas. The effects will be noticeable 4-7 days later and lasts for between 3-6 months. The results often last longer with further successive treatments.
Complications are uncommon but can occur. The most common complication is partial eyelid droop (occurring in about 2% of injections), and eyebrow droop or asymmetry. This may last up to three weeks, after which it resolves itself. Anti-wrinkle treatments is not to be used in pregnant or lactating women.

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a medical condition where the sweating exceeds the normal amount required to maintain body temperature. It is a condition that effects millions of people around the world and often goes undiagnosed and untreated.
Uncontrolled sweating can occur in various parts of the body including the hands, feet and the underarms. Although high temperatures or stress can increase perspiration they do not cause hyperhidrosis. Instead, hyperhidrosis may be an inherited predisposition that prevents the body effectively regulating its temperature.
Anti-wrinkle treatment injections can be used to treat axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating), targeting perspiration at its source. When injected it blocks the release of a chemical that triggers perspiration in the specific glands in the underarm responsible for excessive sweating.
The procedure only takes about 10 minutes, and more than 90% of patients have a significant decrease in the amount of sweating. The effects of the treatment last an average of 7.5 months (range 6-9 months).
Side effects are uncommon and are temporary. Some patients perceived an increase in sweating in areas other than the underarms, pain at the injection site, pain, hot flushes, and transient arm weakness.

Migraine headaches affect 18 percent of women and 6 percent of men, with about one-third of patients with chronic migraine headaches having no relief with standard therapies.
Recent evidence suggests that many patients suffering from migraines have a significant benefit from the use of anti-wrinkle treatments. This finding was originally noted in patients who had anti-wrinkle treatments injections for cosmetic purposes, but there have now been a number of trials showing that many patients have a total reduction in migraines for 2-3 months after anti-wrinkle treatments, with most patients having a significant improvement in both the number and intensity of their migraines.
For those patients who have a significant improvement in migraine symptoms after anti-wrinkle treatments, surgical removal of the triggering muscles via endoscopic browlift or blepharoplasty incisions can produce a more permanent improvement in the migraine symptoms.

Injectable dermal fillers, such as hyaluronic acid and collagen, are used to replace volume in the skin, giving instantaneous natural enhancement of wrinkles, folds and facial contours.
The fillers are substances naturally found in the skin, and restores a youthful appearance and resilience to skin by simply adding to the natural supply. Areas around the mouth such as the nasolabial folds, marionette lines and vertical lip lines are treated with dermal fillers. Dermal fillers can also be used to give volume and definition to lips (link to lip enhancement).
Dermal fillers are administered through a few injections after using a topical (cream) or local anaesthetic to help numb the area being treated. Treatments usually last for at least 6 months and normal activities can generally be resumed immediately following facial injections.
Usually the side effects of these wrinkle treatments are temporary and localised to the area of injection. The different types of cosmetic injection have different side effects, however in general possible side effects include swelling, pain, burning, bruising or redness at the injection site.

The Fraxel SR1500 laser is a non-ablative laser which improves the skin’s tone and texture, tightening the skin and improving wrinkles, as well as removing unsightly brown pigmentation spots. It is useful for treating the face, neck, décolletage and back of the hands. It is also now the treatment of choice for acne scars, and unlike IPL, can be used on all skin types including Asian and darker skin.
Unlike ablative lasers such as the CO2 resurfacing laser which peel off the skin’s top layers, the Fraxel works by treating a fraction of the skin’s surface (approximately 20-25% per treatment) in a session.
